Introduction To Remix

REMIX aims to provide music making opportunities to young people, in particular those who have had limited access to such resources in the past. Since 2002 REMIX has worked with partner organisations and musicians to provide a wide range of workshops and performances across Bristol. REMIX runs the following programmes in Bristol. Full details of current projects can be found in the workshops and event sections.

Alternative Education Project - providing daytime informal music based education and a key skill qualification for disaffected young people. Sessions are run on a weekly basis as a rolling program of sessions, which develop musical skills and combine workshop sessions with key skills. The alternative education project is a partnership project between Fast Forward, Remix and schools serving the Ashley and St Paul’s areas. The courses are run by Hello Interactive.

Music Mentoring Project - providing advice, coaching, support and tuition throughout the year, tailored to suit the individual needs of each young person. Several young bands and artists formed through the Music Mentoring sessions have gone on to become well known in the city and have begun to gain national interest. Regular sessions for young people include Saturday songwriting workshops, Urban nights, Instrumental Jams, Vocal Workshops and Grime Nights. Music mentoring is run in partnership with the Basement Studio, Studio7 and Colston Hall.

Music Industry Seminars - giving young people the opportunity to ask questions to a panel of industry leaders, gain feedback on their demos and chat in small groups with professionals. These seminars are hugely successful, with panellists including the multi-mobo award winning Kano and Indie outfit The Delays, advising the young people of Bristol on the UK music scene.

Songwriting weeks -a chance for young people to work alongside professional musicians, producers and instrumentalists to develop their songwriting and musical skills, rounded off with an opportunity to perform at a showcase gig in Colston Hall Bar.

Inspire taster sessions – One day workshops in performance, vocal coaching, DJing, MCing, jamming and more. These sessions give young people the opportunity to work with professional musicians on new skills, experiment in new areas and improve their technique.

Bespoke programs – Remix delivers a programme of outreach work working in a variety of settings and locations across the city in response to youth groups, schools, youth offending teams, youth inclusion projects and a variety of other agencies. REMIX is able to provide bespoke programme with any organisations wishing to use music in their work with young people. These can be based around any of the above models. Please contact REMIX to discuss possibilities.
